DAWN Fellowship 2025

Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN) has announced a new fellowship program for young women feminists from the Global South, focusing on “The Political Economy of Gender-Based Violence and Conflict.” This initiative aims to support a young woman feminist committed to women’s rights and gender justice in developing a project that deepens understanding of how gender-based violence and conflict shape gender dynamics, thereby amplifying women’s feminist voices in public discourse.

Objectives of the Fellowship:

  1. Support Innovative Projects: Enable young women feminists to undertake projects centered on research, advocacy, mobilization, resistance, or creative expression related to gender-based violence and conflict.
  2. Enhance Visibility: Increase the impact of feminist perspectives on the political economy of gender-based violence and conflict.
  3. Provide a Platform: Offer opportunities for young women feminists to share their work with diverse audiences both locally and internationally.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Women feminists under the age of 40.
  • Residents of the Global South.
  • Demonstrated commitment to feminist principles and methodologies.
  • Proposals may include research, advocacy, mobilization, resistance, or creative expression.
  • Projects must align with the theme of “The Political Economy of Gender-Based Violence and Conflict.”

While projects focusing on Palestine are especially encouraged, proposals addressing other conflict-affected areas are also welcome.

Fellowship Benefits:

  • Financial Support: A stipend of USD 1,200 per month for 10 months to cover research or project expenses, including materials, travel, and living costs.
  • Mentorship and Networking: Access to a network of experienced feminist researchers, advocates, and activists for guidance and support.
  • Dissemination Opportunities: The ability to present and publish project findings via DAWN’s platforms.

Expectations from Fellows:

  • Deliver tangible outputs as agreed upon with DAWN.
  • Complete project deliverables by the agreed deadlines.
  • Present work at relevant DAWN events.
  • Register outputs under Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.
  • Submit midterm and final reports detailing progress and outcomes.

Application Process:

  1. Proposal Submission: Complete and submit the fellowship application form, detailing the project’s objectives, methodology, expected outcomes, and timeline.
  2. Supporting Documents: Submit a detailed CV, one letter of recommendation from a non-related referee, and a statement of motivation.
  3. Project Expenses: Provide a detailed project budget aligned with the fellowship amount.
  4. Review and Selection: A selection committee will review applications based on relevance, feasibility, originality, and potential impact. Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview to discuss their proposals in more detail.

  • Call for Applications: 20 January 2025
  • Application Deadline: 1 March 2025
  • Selection Announcement: 30 April 2025

The fellowship is expected to begin at the fellow’s convenience between 1 May 2025 and 30 June 2025.

This fellowship offers a significant opportunity for young women feminists from the Global South to contribute to the understanding and advocacy surrounding gender-based violence and conflict, fostering meaningful change in their communities and beyond.
