The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, established by the Hungarian Government in 2013, offers foreign students the opportunity to study in Hungary, promoting cultural exchange and enhancing economic and cultural relations between Hungary and other countries. This prestigious scholarship covers all tuition fees and provides support for accommodation costs, allowing students to fully focus on their academic journey. With an increasing number of programs available in English, students can pursue degrees in various fields at Hungary’s top universities. The scholarship offers a unique opportunity to gain competitive knowledge and international experience while living in a country rich in history, culture, and innovation.
Scholarship:
- Exemption from paying application and tuition fees,
- Place in a dormitory depending on the capacity of the higher education institution or HUF 40,000/month accommodation allowance for 12 months of the year during the whole period of full-time programmes or for the duration of the partial studies,
- Health care services (social services) and supplementary private health insurance,
- Free visa and residence permit administration,
- Use of the services of the library free of charge.
The amount of the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship as of 2020 is HUF 43,700 for students in preparatory, bachelor’s and master’s programmes, and HUF 140,000/month during the first two years (during the training and research period) and HUF 180,000/month during the second two years (the research and dissertation period) of doctoral studies.
ELTE offers a wide range of degree programs to international students, and almost all of them are available for Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders in the fields of Education Sciences and Psychology, Humanities, Informatics, Science, Social Sciences, Primary and Pre-School Education and also Business.Studies are offered on the following levels:
- preparatory course in the Hungarian language (non-degree; 1 year)
- Bachelor’s programmes (undergraduate; 3 or 3 and ½ years)
- Master’s programmes (graduate; 2 years)
- Doctoral programmes (2+2 years)
Eligibility Criteria:
All of the following documents are compulsory and need to be submitted to the online application
system by all applicants until 15 January 2025, with the exception of the medical certificate which
must be submitted only by the nominated applicants until 15 April and the Statement of the
Supervisor (only for doctoral applicants, if required by the doctoral school) which must be submitted
until 15 March 2025.
We require an official, notarized translation of all your original applications documents, which are
not originally written in English, Hungarian or in the language of the selected study programme.
Please note that only files with a maximum size of 4 MB can be uploaded to the system. If the size of
the portfolio is larger than 4 MB, please upload a document that contains the link(s) where the
portfolio file(s) can be downloaded from.
Please, note that no hard copies are required of any of these documents by Tempus Public
Foundation at the time of application, but your Sending Partner might require hard copies.
Each required document must be uploaded to the “Tasks” section, only additional documents can be
added to the “Documents” section.

The educational cooperation agreements in effect between Hungary and the Sending Partners
determine which fields of study and scholarship types applicants are eligible for. Under no
circumstances may applicants apply for a programme that is not available for their country.
